315 NISA: A Helpline for Muslim Women
Last year the Muslim Women’s Helpline, 315 NISA, received approximately 4000 calls from across Canada and the United States. The counsellors began every call with their usual greeting, “This is 315 NISA, what would you like to speak about today?”
With their warm demeanour and professional conduct, it is no surprise that 315 NISA is now in its fourth year of operation. What started as a local initiative in Mississauga, Ontario, has now become the largest Muslim women’s helpline in North America.
A free, confidential, anonymous and non-judgmental helpline, 315 NISA provides support, information, counselling and referrals for Muslim women. For some callers, this means providing a listening ear. Other women seek help with personal matters and work with the counsellor to create an individualized action plan. In addition, callers are given resources and referrals to services in their locality. In every case, the goal of the counsellor is to empower the caller to make a decision that is best for her.
Every counsellor at 315 NISA partakes in a training process and follows strict guidelines to ensure confidentiality. Names and identifying information are not asked for and the conversations are always kept private unless there is a risk of serious danger or if Canadian law requires it.
While the most common issues that the helpline receives are about mental health, self esteem, marital/family problems, domestic abuse and faith related questions, 315 NISA welcomes all types of calls. With the aim to help Muslim women to live happier and more meaningful lives, 315 NISA is a much needed service in our growing community.
The helpline operates daily 10 am – 10 pm EST.
